ADD - Treatment Through Medication
In this third of a series of articles on ADD we're going to focus on treatments for ADD besides simple nutrition. The most common form of treatment for ADD is through medication. The underlying theory on ADD is that it is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Through certain medications we can correct that imbalance and help a person with ADD to live a normal and productive life. PET scans of patients with ADD who are taking medication for their condition show that there is significant improvement in many cases. Medication that is given to treat ADD is to stimulate the production of two neurotransmitters known as dopamine and norephinephrine. These...

How To Recognize the Symptoms of ADHD
An ADHD diagnosis is not formal until formal tests have been given by a licensed psychologist or other mental health professional. Unfortunately, these days school teachers are the ones making the diagnosis when they usually have no qualifications to be able to do so. I think it is good to be cautious in diagnosing disorders and loosely labeling children with ADHD when that may not truly be the case. Often times symptoms of ADHD look like a lot of other things, and it is extremely important to a child's well-being to be careful in the process of evaluating them. It is important and essential, though, that school teachers are keeping their eyes and ears ...

Signs and Symptoms of ADD
The signs of Attention Deficit Disorder may or may not be incredibly apparent. Because of the intricacies of this disorder and the variations from child to child, diagnosis may prove to be a difficult process. The first step is understanding that hyperactivity is not synonymous with Attention Deficit Disorder. While a child may exhibit an increased level of activity with this disorder, it is not an inherent factor of ADD. On the other hand, there are certain characteristics that are prevalent in a child with ADD, such as inattentiveness, impulsiveness, and being easily distracted. Inattentiveness and distractibility go hand and hand. A child with ADD may have a...

ADHD, which stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, was once called hyperkinesis. This is a chronic neurological disorder that affects nearly 10% of all school age children in the United States today.

ADHD is characterized by three types of behaviors - hyperactivity, distractibility, and impulsiveness. These behavioral characteristics can be controlled by counseling, behavioral therapy and medication. Since ADHD is connected to a chemical imbalance in the brain, medications such as hydrochloride and dextroamphetamine are necessary to correct it.

Causes of ADHD

The primary cause of ADHD is relatively unknown to most experts. But some now believe that genetics plays a role. Some also believe that a person's diet might also be a contributing factor as well as the treatment of this disorder. Continuous and increased intake of processed sugars, high carbohydrates and the abundance of unnatural chemicals in food might also cause ADHD.

Some think that ADHD can be treated more effectively with a carefully maintained diet. To them, continuous medication is only a short-term fix. Studies have shown vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, amino acids, essential fatty acids, phospholipids, and probiotics to treat cases of this disorder.

Several studies also show that patients with ADHD often have lower levels of fatty and amino acids in their bodies. It has been proven that not having enough fatty and amino acids can cause a myriad of behavioral problems. Increasing the amount of fatty acids and amino acids in your body can only be accomplished through drug supplementation or diet control.

There have been experiments that show that a carefully monitored diet produces similar results as patients undergoing medication and counseling treatments. The best solution is to follow the advice of a medical professional as well as maintain a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals.

About Attention Deficit Disorder ( ADD ) & its Symptoms
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a condition that is usually characterized by behavioral and learning disorders. ADD generally diagnosed in children, mostly affects the boys than the girls. ADD not only occurs in childhood but also continues till adulthood in some cases. Some of the characteristics that are commonly cited among the children with ADD are hyperactivity, distractibility and impulsivity. ADD results in children finding it difficult to perform a task assigned to them and focus on some of the important aspects of conversations. ADD is a neurobiologically-based developmental disability that usually affects children. The actual cause of ADD is unknown till date. Research has shown that ADD is caused due to the genetic transmission of the condition from the parents to the children and also can be due to the result of a chemical imbalance or deficiency of certain neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters are chemicals that help the brain regulate the behavior of an individual. A recent study has shown that the rate at which the brain uses glucose, its main energy source, is lower in individuals suffering from ADD than in individuals without ADD. The important features associated with ADD are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Some of the symptoms due to inattention include making careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities, facing difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities, not listening when spoken to directly, facing difficulty in organizing tasks and activities, and mostly forgetful in daily activities. Some of the symptoms due to hyperactivity include fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat, running about or climbing excessively in situations in which it is inappropriate, facing difficulty playing...
