Diagnosing Learning Disabilities: Is Your Child Exhibiting ADHD Characteristics?
By Tess Thompson Diagnosing a learning disability or a medical condition like ADHD can be complicated and inexact. In the case of ADHD, many of the telltale symptoms are also often symptoms of regular childhood behavior -- restlessness, rowdiness, and a tendency to be easily distracted. ADHD is treated differently from learning disabilities because it is thought to be different in nature. While most learning disabilities can be diagnosed through specific testing, ADHD requires a more subtle diagnosis through comprehensive evaluation. A learning disability is generally caused by a neurological difference in the brain structure of a child that makes it difficult for him or...

Is Your Child Lazy Or Is It ADHD?
Having grown up with undiagnosed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), I know how it feels to be labeled "lazy" when you're really just fighting ADHD and doing the best you can to fit your ADHD square peg into the round hole of life. I remember, as an ADD child, deciding I wouldn't write my spelling words five times. I just didn't want to do it. To a kid with ADHD, that kind of work is just torture, and I quit doing it. I remember that ADHD experience because I failed sixth grade spelling, though I went to the spelling bee as champion for my class. I remember how painful it was when my parents, who'd never heard of ADHD, called me lazy--and meant it I know how it feels to be...

ADHD Help

Author:
Kristy Annely

ADHD is an acronym that stands from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This disorder is more common in males. It is generally diagnosed by the age of seven and is usually accompanied by a learning disability.

There has been a great debate when it comes to the primary cause of this disorder. Most medical experts agree that ADHD is attributed to a chemical imbalance in the part of the brain that controls the ability to maintain attention. Most also blame genetics as a contributing factor in developing ADHD. Others argue that a child's diet has a tremendous impact on whether they are susceptible to ADHD. They believe that the intake of processed sugars, preservatives, and artificial flavoring is the main cause of this disorder. Studies from both sides have resulted in similar results. A definite cause is yet to be found.

Where do I get help?

The most common treatment for ADHD is behavioral therapy and emotional counseling combined with medication to counteract the chemical imbalance in the brain. Once formally diagnosed, you should seek the help from a psychiatrist or a psychologist that has experience with ADHD.

If the doctor tells you that medication is required, be sure to do research first before committing to anything. Drug research is very biased, and the efficacy of drug treatment is now being questioned by the scientific community. Be sure to read extensively about any drug that you or your child is going to take. There might be side effects that could damage the sufferer in the long run, regardless if they stopped taking the drug or not.

There are also many support groups available for children who suffer from ADHD as well as for their parents. These groups are forums where people get together with others who are suffering from the same thing and talk about similar experiences to help each other deal with the disease more easily.

Causes of ADHD
ADHD is an acronym which stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a chronic, neurologically-based syndrome and is mostly found in boys. Several experts consider ADHD as a form of brain damage. ADHD sufferers generally exhibit three behavioral characteristics. These include hyperactivity, distractibility and impulsivity. Hyperactivity is the feeling of overwhelming restlessness that disallows sufferers to remain calm. Distractibility curbs the ability to complete simple tasks by sidetracking sufferers with irrelevant things. Impulsivity is the inability of patients to stop blurting out inappropriate things. Even though these types of behavior can be found in a lot of people, ADHD sufferers have them in the extreme. These behaviors might cause problems in their day-to-day lives. Causes The main cause of ADHD is still relatively unknown. Many experts believe that genetics may play a factor in its development. In the past, a lot of experts believed that a diet rich in sugar, preservatives and artificial flavorings causes ADHD. However, recent findings have concluded that a person's diet has no bearing on the progression of ADHD. Studies have shown that the main cause of this disorder is having a less than normal amount of activity in the part of the brain that controls attention. A child with ADHD is usually diagnosed by the age of seven and usually suffers from some form of learning disability as well. Treatment Once diagnosed, ADHD is typically easy to remedy. The treatment usually consists of counseling, behavioral therapy, and medication. Medication is necessary to correct the chemical imbalance that is present in the brain. The symptoms of ADHD will usually decrease as the child grows older. Any trace of ADHD usually disappears by the end of...
