Diagnosing Learning Disabilities: Is Your Child Exhibiting ADHD Characteristics?
By Tess Thompson Diagnosing a learning disability or a medical condition like ADHD can be complicated and inexact. In the case of ADHD, many of the telltale symptoms are also often symptoms of regular childhood behavior -- restlessness, rowdiness, and a tendency to be easily distracted. ADHD is treated differently from learning disabilities because it is thought to be different in nature. While most learning disabilities can be diagnosed through specific testing, ADHD requires a more subtle diagnosis through comprehensive evaluation. A learning disability is generally caused by a neurological difference in the brain structure of a child that makes it difficult for him or...

Disorders that Accompany ADHD
Tourette Syndrome: A very small proportion of people with ADHD have a neurological disorder called Tourette Syndrome, which causes various nervous tics and repetitive mannerisms. While very few children have this syndrome, many of the cases of Tourette syndrome have associated ADHD. Oppositional Defiant Disorder: As many as one-third to one-half of all children with ADHD--mostly boys--have another condition, known as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). These children are often defiant, stubborn, non-compliant, have outbursts of temper, or become belligerent. They argue with adults and refuse to obey. Conduct Disorder: About 20 to 40 percent of ADHD children may eventually develop...

What Causes ADHD?
Parents of children with ADHD often blame themselves for it. But studies show little evidence that ADHD is caused by social factors or child-rearing methods, indicating instead that genetics and neurobiology are to blame. Environmental factors do not give rise to ADHD completely, but only influence the situation and level of impairment the person may experience. There are six possible causes of ADHD-like behavior: learning disability, a sudden change in the child's life like loss of loved one, seizures, hearing difficulty, brain dysfunction, and anxiety. There are four major causes of ADHD, namely, environmental agents, brain injury, food additives and sugar, and genetics. Studies show...

Causes of ADHD

Author:
Kristy Annely

ADHD is an acronym which stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a chronic, neurologically-based syndrome and is mostly found in boys. Several experts consider ADHD as a form of brain damage.

ADHD sufferers generally exhibit three behavioral characteristics. These include hyperactivity, distractibility and impulsivity. Hyperactivity is the feeling of overwhelming restlessness that disallows sufferers to remain calm. Distractibility curbs the ability to complete simple tasks by sidetracking sufferers with irrelevant things. Impulsivity is the inability of patients to stop blurting out inappropriate things. Even though these types of behavior can be found in a lot of people, ADHD sufferers have them in the extreme. These behaviors might cause problems in their day-to-day lives.

Causes

The main cause of ADHD is still relatively unknown. Many experts believe that genetics may play a factor in its development. In the past, a lot of experts believed that a diet rich in sugar, preservatives and artificial flavorings causes ADHD. However, recent findings have concluded that a person's diet has no bearing on the progression of ADHD.

Studies have shown that the main cause of this disorder is having a less than normal amount of activity in the part of the brain that controls attention. A child with ADHD is usually diagnosed by the age of seven and usually suffers from some form of learning disability as well.

Treatment

Once diagnosed, ADHD is typically easy to remedy. The treatment usually consists of counseling, behavioral therapy, and medication. Medication is necessary to correct the chemical imbalance that is present in the brain. The symptoms of ADHD will usually decrease as the child grows older. Any trace of ADHD usually disappears by the end of adolescence. However, there has been an increase in the number of cases where the symptoms of ADHD persisted until adulthood.

The Cost of ADHD - Treatment a Must for Mental, Physical and Financial Health
According to recent studies ADHD is one of the most costly health conditions in the U.S. - topped only by alcohol abuse and clearly ahead of drug abuse in terms of cost. Annually, alcohol abuse costs American families $86 billion in lost household income. The annual cost for ADHD is $77 billion and the annual cost for drug abuse is $58 billion. Hard costs, like out-of-pocket medical treatment, are only one aspect of lost income. ADHD high school graduates and college graduates make considerably less money annually than their non-ADHD counterparts. Research indicates that it doesn’t matter if the person with ADHD has the same level of education as someone who does not have ADHD, the person with ADHD will make less money than the person without ADHD. The numbers are between $4500.00 and $10,000.00 annually. People with ADHD suffer from symptoms like inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity - which are not always conducive to the work environment. Although about half the children with ADHD learn to adequately manage their symptoms into adulthood, the other half continue to struggle as they transition from school to work. If ADHD goes untreated into adulthood, the symptoms can affect their financial health by making it harder to hold down a job, making it harder to obtain the education needed to land high-paying jobs and it can cause more lost work days. Many psychiatrists that treat adults with ADHD ask their clients to bring in their employee evaluations, most of the evaluations brought in read like a textbook case. The ADHD adult will talk out of turn, have difficulty following through with instructions, show lack of focus, have difficulty finishing projects and complain of being disorganized. Symptoms like these make it very hard for an adult with ADHD to...
